thyssenkrupp DRI Plant to Utilize Midrex Technology

thyssenkrupp earlier this month announced it had placed an EUR1.8 billion order with SMS group for the project, which includes the direct reduced iron (DRI) module, two melting units and ancillary equipment.

The DRI plant will, at the start of its operation, consume natural gas and hydrogen, but will transition to full hydrogen operation when sufficient supplies become available.

The project is meant to advance thyssenkrupp’s decarbonization efforts and is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3.5 million tons per year.

“Midrex prides itself in being at the leading edge of technology, and with our SMS group partners we are demonstrating that leadership in two first-of-their-kind green steel projects,” said Midrex chief executive Stephen Montague.
