thyssenkrupp Contracts Primetals Technologies for Mill Reconfiguration
03/11/2021 - Primetals Technologies has been awarded contracts related to major casting and rolling investments at thyssenkrupp’s Duisburg and Bochum sites in Germany.
According to Primetals Technologies, the contracts provide for overhauls of a cast-roll line and a continuous caster and installation of a new double reversing mill. The projects are part of thyssenkrupp’s Strategy 20-30.
“With the biggest investment package under our Strategy 20-30, we are moving onto the offensive in order to maintain and strengthen our position as leader in key growth and focus segments. Our customers will require different and better products in the future: lower tolerances, increased crash safety requirements, steel for more powerful electric motors. The investments in our facilities will enable us to meet these requirements,” said thyssenkrupp executive board chairman Bernard Osburg.
“We are implementing the approved investment projects immediately in order to achieve the associated positive portfolio effects as quickly as possible. In Primetals Technologies we are delighted to have an excellent partner at our side for the implementation of the forthcoming major projects. Primetals Technologies convinced us with a cohesive, holistic and innovative proposal for the revamp and new-build work,” he added.
Primetals Technologies said the centerpiece of the work will be to split the cast-roll line at the company’s Duisburg site into an independent caster and hot strip mill. As it is, the integrated line’s quality capabilities are no longer sufficient to meet future customer requirements, Primetals Technologies said.
“By separating and rebuilding the casting and rolling sections, we can further enhance our capabilities for high-strength steels and premium finishes. By splitting off the rolling section into a separate hot strip mill, we will also make our slab production more flexible,” said thyssenkrupp chief technology officer Arnd Köfler.
