ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni Relocates Production from Turin to Terni
06/27/2007 - ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni is undertaking an extensive program to expand the capacity of its plant in Terni and bring it in line with the best of its competitors, including relocation of the entire Turin production capacity to Terni.
Relocating cold-rolled production from Turin to Terni will further optimize the company’s competitiveness. “This step isn’t easy for us but it is unavoidable for economic reasons and with a view to the future of the company as a whole,” said Dr. Harald Espenhahn. “We want to create production and cost structures similar to those of our best competitors.” The Turin site had significant disadvantages in terms of logistics, energy costs, infrastructure and environmental requirements. The high cost of transporting coils between the Terni and Turin sites was a particular disadvantage.
After phasing out production at Turin, the equipment will be completely dismantled and some items will be relocated to Terni. According to current plans, closure of the site will be completed by the end of fiscal 2007/08. All employees will be offered a job within the AST group. “We need skilled personnel to continue our successful growth course,” says Dr. Espenhahn. “Our company would not be the success it is without the reliability, commitment and professionalism of our employees.”
ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni has seen significant investment since it was acquired in 1994. The parent company ThyssenKrupp Stainless launched an additional capital expenditure program two years ago, and has invested around 300 million euros in ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni since early 2005, well beyond the originally agreed-upon 124 million euros. Investments to date have included a further cold rolling mill, finishing center, and a new training center, and a new annealing and pickling line and new VOD converter for ferritic stainless steels are under construction. At Società delle Fucine, which operates Europe’s largest forging press, new equipment will be installed from 2008 that will enhance performance capability and enable the ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni subsidiary to produce parts weighing up to about 250 tonnes.
The various measures will increase stainless production in Terni from 570,000 to nearly 700,000 tonnes of cold-rolled steel per year in the future, creating the conditions at ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni for the highest levels of steel quality, optimized processing capabilities, and an extended product range.
The recent investments and performance enhancements have already helped to significantly strengthen ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni. “Divisions which were rated critical a few years ago have now demonstrated their performance capabilities. They were helped in this by successful integration into the global network of the Stainless group,” said the Executive Board Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Stainless, Jürgen Fechter.
ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni, a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Stainless, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of stainless steel flat products with a capacity of around 1.5 million tonnes per year. In addition to the service centers of Terninox, ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni has manufacturing subsidiaries in Tubificio di Terni, Società delle Fucine and ThyssenKrupp Titanium. In fiscal year 2005/06 the company generated sales of around 2.5 billion euros. It employs roughly 3,000 people in Terni.
