thyssenkrupp, Primetals Technologies Partner on Blast Furnace Decarbonization Technology
10/04/2021 - The two companies have signed an exclusive agreement to bring to market the Sequence Impulse Process (SIP) for blast furnaces, Primetals Technologies has announced.
The SIP technology was created at thyssenkrupp AT.PRO tec, part of of thyssenkrupp Materials Services. Known for its use in cupola furnaces, the concepts of the process have been tailored for the blast furnace.
According to Primetals Technologies, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s Schwelgern blast furnace #1 has served as the proving ground for the technology’s use in an integrated steelmaking facility.
SIP improves combustion and conversion of fuel by repurposing the enrichment oxygen and delivering a series of controlled, high-energy pulses for a local concentration in the raceway. Total fuel rate can be lowered and carbon dioxide emission reduced through the process.
“The cooperation makes a lot of sense for Primetals Technologies because our plant building competence and blast furnace process knowledge are complemented by thyssenkrupp’s vast operating expertise, particularly on large units,” said Paul Freeman, director of the blast furnace business for Primetals Technologies UK.
“We’ve been engaged for some time now in supporting our customers in developing their road maps to carbon neutrality. We know that new technologies will eventually replace the blast furnace, but these will take a long time to mature.”
