The World Made More Steel in 2016; Not So in the U.S.
01/25/2017 - Although the world’s crude steel output rose slightly in 2016, production in the United States dipped 0.3%, according to the World Steel Association.
Announcing its annual tally on Wednesday, the association said the U.S. produced 86.6 million tons, or 78.6 million metric tons, down from 86.9 million tons (78.8 million metric tons) in 2015. Meanwhile, global output rose 0.8% to about 1.8 billion tons (1.63 billion metric tons) in 2016.
The U.S. retains its ranking at the world’s fourth largest producer of crude steel, behind China, India and Japan. China produced 891.1 million tons (808.4 million metric tons) in 2016, up 1.2% from the previous year.
