The World Made Less Steel in 2022. Here’s How Much Output Fell.
02/01/2023 - Global crude steel production declined 4.2% in 2022, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
According to worldsteel’s preliminary annual tally, production dropped to 1.88 billion metric tons, down from 1.96 billion metric tons in 2021.
China remained the world’s largest producer at 1.01 billion metric tons, but its output was down 2.1% from the prior year.
Of the world’s 10 largest producers, the only countries to increase production were India, where output rose 5.5% to 124.7 million metric tons, and Iran, where output increased 8% to 30.6 million metric tons.
The U.S., the world’s fourth largest producer, saw its output fall 5.9% to 80.7 million metric tons.
The tally is based on data from 64 countries, accounting for approximately 98% of worldwide production, worldsteel said.
