The Systems Group Commissions New EAF Roof, Elbow at Optimus Steel
12/07/2021 - In a press release, The Systems Group announced the commissioning last month of a new gravity-drained Spray-Cooled™ electric arc furnace (EAF) roof and elbow as part of a mill modernization at Optimus Steel in Beaumont, Texas, USA.
The scope of supply included a new EAF roof, elbow, engineering, laser scans and equipment to replace the existing tubular equipment, Systems said.
The design of the EAF roof and piping do not require venturi suction pumps to evacuate water from the roof, thus eliminating the need for the pumps and the required piping. In addition, the EAF roof, which has an oversized diameter, was converted from a traditional 4-point gantry lift roof to a 2-point gantry lift roof, Systems said.
The company said this project is expected to be the first phase of a multi-phase meltshop upgrade by Optimus to a more optimized design.
