The New Bronco: Built Ford Tough. With ArcelorMittal Steel.
10/14/2020 - When ArcelorMittal announced last month that it would divest most of its U.S. assets, it promised it would remain no less a player in the automotive steel market. A new announcement from the company seems to bear that out.
ArcelorMittal on Monday said it has been chosen as the sole supplier of third-generation, advanced high-strength steel for the new 2021 Ford Bronco, the iconic off-roader that is set to relaunch next year. ArcelorMittal said its Fortiform 980 GI product will be the only third-generation AHSS used in the vehicle, which prioritizes weight and safety.
“Ford called us to see if we could develop this specific type of steel. We were actually already in the development phase so we discussed the opportunities as well as where they could utilize this material and for which vehicle,” said Michael Lizak, global technology coordinator for Ford’s automotive product applications research and development team.
Steel for the vehicle will come from ArcelorMittal’s AM/NS Calvert plant in Alabama.
