On Monday, Fiat Chrysler unveiled its 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck, which is 225 lbs. lighter than its predecessor, due in part to its use of steel. And over the weekend, General Motors debuted its 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, which is 450 lbs. lighter than the previous version and has a roll-formed, high-strength steel bed, reports The Detroit News.  

"We know there is more than one element in the periodic table," said Silverado chief engineer Tim Herrick, taking a shot at Ford and its aluminum F-150, according to the newspaper. 

The Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of the American Iron & Steel Institute, is at the show and has set up an interactive display showcasing the Dodge Ram’s use of steel in the new pickup. 

According to the institute, the frame is almost entirely made from high-strength steel, as is more than half of the core body structure. 

"With so much conversation surrounding mixed materials, we wanted to create an experience for attendees to demonstrate how steel, with its various grades and strengths, is really a mixed material," said Jody Hall, the institute's automotive market vice president. 

"The inclusion of this display as part of the introduction of the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 showcases how steel provides engineers the right grade for the right application. The Ram is a great demonstration of how steel is driving automotive innovation with the truck’s capability, efficiency, durability and weight reduction."

The show, officially called the North American International Auto Show, continues this week.
