Tenova to Install First Zero Effluent Pickling Line in Uganda

Tenova Strip Processing recently received a contract from Roofing Mills Ltd to design and supply a zero-effluent pickling line (push pull type).

The plant, which includes a proper hydrochloric acid (HCl) regeneration plant, is part of the first cold rolling complex under construction in Uganda. It will be used to produce galvanized and color coated coils mainly for construction and building application.

Tenova’s concept for zero effluent features an innovative use of waters in the plant, with no waste water treatment for acidic effluents, combined scrubber system ARP & pickling line (resulting in a lower-cost investment) and efficient use of water, combined rinse & off gas scrubber system, no neutralization costs for chemicals/sludge disposal, and near-zero losses of HCl (resulting in low operation costs). The system is also environmental friendly, as it capable of meeting the strict emission values required by European Union standards.

This innovative concept comprises an effective 2-tank pickling system (usable for capacities ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 tonnes/year) and an innovative 4-stage rinse system, using part of the rinse water in the tank fumes scrubber. The scrubber is designed to clean both the off-gas from the acid regeneration plant as well as the fumes from the pickling tanks suction system.

The design is made to reach strict emission values without use of alkaline chemicals, so the acidic water from the scrubber can be fully used in the in the absorption step of the acid regeneration plant, allowing recovery of most of the HCl.
