Tenova to Build Largest Hydrogen DRI Plant in China for Baowu Group
03/03/2022 - Sinosteel Engineering & Technology Co. Ltd. has partnered with Tenova to build a 1-million-metric-ton direct reduced iron (DRI) plant for China’s Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Tenova reports.
According to the supplier, the ENERGIRON® DRI plant will be the largest hydrogen-based DRI facility in China. The plant will use hydrogen as its main reduction gas but will also have the flexibility to employ different reducing gases such as natural gas and coke oven gas. The plant will also feature carbon capture technology, allowing the plant to sell its CO2 on a commercial scale.
Stefano Maggiolino, president and chief executive of Tenova HYL, said, “This is the first direct reduction iron production line integrating hydrogen, natural gas and coke oven gas for industrial production. Thanks to our technology, Baowu Group can proceed towards the path of reducing carbon emission and reaching carbon neutrality in 2050 and Tenova is very proud to be part of this journey.”
