Tenova Signs Preliminary Agreement to Build South American DRI Plant
07/22/2016 - A Peruvian company developing an iron ore mine in the southern Andes has struck a preliminary agreement with Tenova for two ore-processing plants, Tenova has announced.
Tenova said the cooperation agreement calls for development of a 500,000-metric-ton-per year pelletization plant and a 250,000-metric-ton-per-year high-carbon, direct reduced iron plant. The DRI plant will utilize Tenova HYL Micro Module technology, Tenova said.
‘‘The Tenova HYL Micro Module will allow our company to add significant value to our iron ore deposit in (Peru), producing high-carbon DRI with the proven zero-reformer technology. The Micro Module uses the same zero-reformer technology applied in Nucor’s Louisiana, USA, plant, but is one-tenth of the size and allows junior mining companies like ours to enter the DRI production market with a limited capital investment,” said Alfonso Navarro, chief executive of Ferrobamba, the proposed mine’s developer.
“Our company will be in a position to produce a premium quality DRI that is not currently available in the region,” he said.
Ferrobamba said its proposed 5,200-hectare mine, Hierro Aymaraes, is potentially one of the highest quality, lowest cost iron ore projects in the Americas.
