Tenova Re Energy to Supply Hyundai Steel with Irecovery Systems for Two EAFs
03/07/2012 - Tenova Re Energy has signed a contract with Hyundai Steel for the supply of two iRecovery systems for the company’s plant in Incheon, South Korea. They will help to recover lost heat from the off-gases of a 90-ton EAF and an 80-ton EAF.
Tenova Re Energy has signed a contract with Hyundai Steel, part of the KIA Motor Group, for the supply of two iRecovery® systems for the company’s plant in Incheon, South Korea. The heat recovery systems will be installed respectively on a 90-ton EAF and an 80-ton EAF.
The iRecovery system’s design is based on an “Evaporative Cooling System” that uses water at its boiling point under high pressure. The water, which is used as a cooling fluid, is forced into the cooling circuit. As energy from the EAF offgases is absorbed, part of the cooling water is converted into steam which is then available for further applications. The iRecovery system also includes accumulation tanks that help to compensate for the heat interruptions between melting cycles.
Considering that some 30 to 35% of the energy from the melting process is lost into the EAF’s off-gases in the form of unused sensible and chemical energy, the iRecovery system enables recovery of a significant portion of the “lost” heat associated with the off-gases. The process yields industrial steam that can be used for such applications as Vacuum Degassing Systems, District Heating, Power Generation, etc.
According to the company, in stable operating conditions, the two EAFs guarantee continuous production of about 16.5 tonnes of steam per EAF. The system’s capacity for heat recovery also enables further reductions in overall GHG emissions.
Start-Up of the first iRecovery system is scheduled for March 2013, while the other system will be put into operation as early as August 2012.
