Tenova LOI Italimpianti to Supply Pit-type Furnace for Alstom

LOI Thermprocess, a Tenova LOI Italimpianti company, has received a contract is to supply a large pit-type furnace for installation at Alstom’s plant in Birr, Switzerland. Alstom will use the furnace to stress relieve turbine shafts.
 
The large pit-type furnace comprises a fixed base with recirculation fans, four heated rings and a cover. The furnace’s cover and the top one or two rings can be removed for charging and discharging. The furnace is heated by low-maintenance electric heating elements.
 
The furnace’s bottom section will have a maximum outside diameter of 6500 mm, and the unit will have an overall height of 16,000 mm.
 
The new furnace, which will be controlled by a Siemens S-7 400 PLC, will be used for treating rotors with weights up to 200 tonnes and lengths up to 12,000 in a protective controlled atmosphere. It will also employ a higher-level visualization system based on WinCC.
 
Due to be commissioned in mid-2010, the new furnace is LOI’s second contract for in the past six months for a heat treatment furnace of this type. LOI is also supplying another pit-type furnace to Alstom's facility in Chattanooga, Tenn.
