Tenova Goodfellow to Install EFSOP Technology on Wheeling Pittsburgh EAF

Tenova Goodfellow has finalized contract negotiations to apply the Goodfellow EFSOP® process control technology as part of Wheeling-Pittsburgh’s 270-ton Consteel® EAF installation at the company’s Steubenville/Mingo Junction Plant. This EAF is unique in its capacity to charge hot metal and scrap simultaneously.

Tenova Goodfellow’s scope of work for the project will include providing process technology and equipment to sample and analyze EAF off-gases continuously at the fourth hole for CO, CO2, O2 and H2. This technology will help to provide real-time closed-loop process control of steelmaking, resulting in improved operations, energy savings, lower conversion costs and safety benefits.

Specific benefits to be realized with the installation include increased safety resulting from maximized post combustion plus CO and H2 measurements in the off-gas; and improved energy efficiency. Energy improvements will result from the use of the new technology to identify periods of low energy transfer (energy waste) in the EAF; track the efficiency of oxygen injection operations to aid in adjustment of lancing profiles; and monitor carbon recovery to aid in adjustment of carbon injection profiles.

Wheeling-Pittsburgh will also employ Tenova Goodfellow’s EFSOP technology to recognize and track changes in the scrap quality.
