Tenova Goodfellow, ArcelorMittal Dofasco to Collaborate on EAF Energy Project

Tenova Goodfellow Inc. has signed a contribution agreement with Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to demonstrate the company’s proprietary “Next Gen Energy Efficiency Breakthrough Technology” System for the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) industry.
 
Tenova Goodfellow's second SDTC-supported project to develop leading edge clean technology will be completed in collaboration with leading Canadian steel producer, ArcelorMittal Dofasco.
 
“Supporting clean energy technology in Canada is an effective way to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create high-quality jobs for Canadians,” said David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster–Dundas–Flamborough–Westdale. “SDTC funding to Tenova Goodfellow’s Next Gen Electric Arc Furnace system is another example of how we are strengthening Canada’s position as a leader in clean energy technology.”
 
The Next Gen EAF project aims to demonstrate a comprehensive real-time monitoring and process control system where the furnace is controlled and operated according to the total electrical and chemical energy input that is adjusted dynamically for energy losses. The objective is to use an array of advanced sensors and process models to manage the EAF mass and energy balance online with the primary goal being to make a step change of approximately 5% (36 kWh/ton of steel) reduction in EAF energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions.
 
A successful first project with SDTC brought to fruition the launch of the company’s i-BOF® and
i-Combustion® technologies, making it possible for Tenova Goodfellow to enter into significant new international market opportunities in the area of BOF Steelmaking and Cement applications.
 
As the host test site, ArcelorMittal Dofasco and other EAF operators will benefit from further development of predictive models and real-time analysis in the steel melting process, thus creating the opportunity for better use of energy and emission controls.

As the Lead Organization, Tenova Goodfellow will direct the project along with Consortium Members, University of Toronto, ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Tenova SpA, and Tenova Re Energy GmbH. The project will receive more than $1.5 million in funding over three years by SDTC. In addition to SDTC funding, this project is leveraged by a significant cash and in-kind investment from the consortium partners.
