Tenaris Plans November Restart of Idled Tube Mill
09/15/2016 - Tenaris plans to restart its idled seamless mill in Ontario, Canada, and is recalling between 120 and 150 union workers, the company has announced.
"While market volatility persists, a modest improvement in Tenaris’ forecast, as well as progress in ongoing policy discussions with members of the federal and provincial government that support Canadian manufacturing, drove the decision to commence operations," the company said in a statement.
Tenaris idled the AlgomaTubes mill in March, blaming competition from unfairly traded imports and the prolonged industry downturn. It expects to resume production in November, but said it would act on those plans carefully.
"We are cautiously proceeding to restart Algoma, understanding the environment of today remains difficult," said Guillermo Moreno, Tenaris’ vice president and managing director for Canada, in a statement.
United Steelworkers Local 9548, which represents workers at the mill, said the news is welcomed. However, the number of employees being recalled is, nevertheless, one-third of the number that had worked there in 2014, Cody Alexander, the local's president, told the CBC, Canada's public broadcaster.
