Tata Steel Works Starts Up New Cooling System
08/24/2018 - Tata Steel Europe’s Port Talbot facility in Wales expects to gain 150,000 metric tons of annual capacity from new equipment installed on the hot strip mill, according to an announcement from Primetals Technologies.
According to Primetals Technologies, the facility recently commissioned a new transfer bar cooling system that sits between the roughing stand and the finishing stand, allowing for precise control of strip temperatures as it enters the finishing stand. This allows operators to maintain roughing stand speeds, Primetals Technologies said.
The system, which is based on Primetals Technologies´ Power Cooling technology, employs 18 spray headers, nine on top and nine on bottom, and is about 10 m long.
“In order to cope with a large variety of steel grades and process requirements, especially the minimum surface temperature of the bar during cooling, the flow rates of the Power Cooling headers are adjustable over a wide range, so that a lower cooling intensity is also achievable as required for each individual product,” Primetals Technologies said.
