Tata Steel Trials H2 Injection
04/25/2023 - Tata Steel has begun trialing hydrogen injection into a blast furnace at its Jamshedpur facility in India, the company reports.
According to Tata, it is injecting hydrogen at up to 40% into the E blast furnace. The trial began Sunday and is to run continuously for four to five days, concluding no later than Thursday, the company said.
“This is the first time in the world that such a large quantity of hydrogen gas is being continuously injected in a blast furnace,” Tata Steel said.
The company said the trial could potentially reduce the coke rate by 10%.
“As we explore the potential of greener fuel injectants we are excited to see the impact it can have on reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions,” said Uttam Singh, Tata Steel vice president of ironmaking.“We are confident that this trial will provide valuable insights into operating blast furnaces with hydrogen and help us identify the next steps towards achieving our goal of a leaner carbon future."
