Tata Steel to Build Mini Steel Recycling Plants
02/09/2022 - According to top company officials, Tata Steel is gearing up to build small-sized factories to make reinforced steel from scrapped automobiles and other products.
The Hindu Business Line reports the company “commissioned its first such steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana, last year in partnership with Aarti Green Tech.”
Tata Steel’s managing director and chief executive TV Narendran said Tata Steel is “talking about setting up, in the next few months, half a million or 800,000-metric-ton steel plant which will process scrap steel and convert that into reinforced steel.”
Narendran also said more plants like the one in Rohtak will open in other parts of the country over the next few years. These facilities can be set up on a much smaller area closer to the recycling unit in an electric arc furnace–based plant than that of a conventional steel plant.
According to The Hindu Business Line, the Indian government is encouraging vehicle owners to give up older vehicles that are not roadworthy. The scrapping of such vehicles will give rise to more scrap yards and the need for steelmaking facilities that utilize recycled steel.
