Tata Steel Signs Contracts With Clecim, ABB Ltd. to Supply Pickling Line
04/09/2025 - Tata Steel announced that as part of its GBP1.25 billion investment to bring green steelmaking to its Port Talbot site in Wales, U.K., which includes GBP500 million in government support, it has signed contracts with Clecim and ABB Ltd. to supply a pickling line.
“Our new and advanced pickle line will form a major part of our green steelmaking facility at Port Talbot, ensuring we can supply downstream businesses with the high-quality, low-CO₂ steel products our customers are demanding,” said Rajesh Nair, chief executive officer of Tata Steel UK.
According to a press release, the new line will process hot-rolled coils to eliminate oxide scale formed during the steel rolling process. This will ensure a clean surface for further processing, improving quality and enhancing the bonding of coatings or finishes.
“We are proud to help pioneer this project by combining engineering, sourcing, and mechatronic products manufactured in France, to make this phase of Port Talbot’s transformation a reality,” said Thomas Comte, chief executive officer of Clecim.
The companies said Clecim will design and supply mechanical and process equipment while ABB will deliver electrification and automation technology. Having completed the pre-engineering phase, they will now proceed with detailed engineering.
“This is yet another positive step towards securing a bright future for steel in South Wales, following the improved deal for Port Talbot’s transition we agreed with Tata Steel and the next phase of our steel plan,” said U.K. Industry Minister Sarah Jones.
The companies estimate the project will employ 250 people during the construction phase.
