Tata Steel Reports Increased Production, Sales for Fiscal Year 2008-09
04/07/2009 - Tata Steel reports a 45% increase in sales in March and a 9% increase in sales for its fiscal year 2008-09, as well as increased production of hot metal, crude steel, and saleable steel for both periods.
Tata Steel reported a 45% increase in sales as well as increased production of hot metal, crude steel, and saleable steel in March 2009 as compared to March 2008. For the fiscal year 2008-09, the company reported a 9% increase in sales as well as increased production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel as compared to the previous fiscal year, 2007-08.
In March 2009, the company produced 592,000 tonnes of hot metal (+20% vs. March 2008), 550,000 tonnes of crude steel (+17% vs. March 2008), and 578,000 tonnes of saleable steel (+28% vs. March 2008). Sales, 696,000 tonnes, reflect a 45% increase vs. March 2008.
For the year, the company reported its best-ever hot metal production of 6.254 million tonnes, a 14% increase over the previous year. Crude steel (5.646 million tonnes) was up 13%, and saleable steel (5.375 million tonnes) was up 11% vs. the previous year.
The company’s Sinter Plant produced a best-ever total of 6.5 million tonnes of sinter, which compares to a previous best of 5.88 million tonnes in FY’08. The plant also achieved its highest-ever solid waste utilization at 90%, which compares to a previous best of 85.4% in FY’08.
The company’s newly commissioned ‘H’ Blast Furnace surpassed its yearly target while in its first year of operation, and is now running above its rated capacity.
One of the company’s Steel Meltshops (comprising LD No. 2 & Slab Caster) achieved best-ever slab production of 3.52 million tonnes, which compares to the previous best of 3.35 million tonnes in FY’08. LD No. 1 also achieved best-ever annual billet production of 2.12 million tonnes, which compares to a previous best of 1.76 million tonnes in FY’07.
One of the company’s finishing mills (i.e. the New Bar Mill) achieved highest-ever production of 0.611 million tonnes, which compares to a previous best of 0.549 million tonnes in FY’08.
The company’s West Bokaro Division for the first time dispatched 1.956 million tonnes of clean coal, which compares to a previous best of 1.77 million tonnes in FY’08. The company’s Jharia Division produced highest-ever raw coal of 1.58 million tonnes, which compares to a previous best of 1.486 million tonnes in FY’08. The company’s OMQ Division produced highest-ever iron ore of 10.72 million tonnes, which compares to a previous best of 10.29 million tonnes in FY’08.
Tata Steel reported overall sales of 5.231 million tonnes for fiscal year 2008-09, reflecting 9% growth as compared to 4.782 million tonnes in FY’08. The company also reported a 25% increase in long products sales, which reached 2.0 million tonnes vs. 1.60 million tonnes in FY’08. The company also reported highest-ever flat products sales of 3.22 million tonnes, which compares to sales of 3.18 million tonnes in FY’08.
Tata Steel also reached a major milestone in its TQM journey in 2008-09 by winning the prestigious Deming Award, the only integrated steel company outside Japan to have won this award.
