Tata Steel Relights Port Talbot Blast Furnace
01/30/2019 - Tata Steel Europe on Tuesday celebrated the restart of a blast furnace at its Port Talbot works in the U.K., marking the end of a project that will extend the furnace’s life for another five to seven years.
“The life extension project of Blast Furnace 5 cost tens of millions of pounds and is a critical part of Tata Steel’s long-term strategy to strengthen its operations in the U.K., underpinning improvements throughout its U.K. supply chain,” the company said in a statement.
The company said the project, which began last fall, was the single largest project at the facility in more than five years. The company said the project entailed replace of some of the refractories and other vital structural parts. The waste gas and dust extraction system, including the 100-ton downcomer, also were replaced.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to building a stronger and more sustainable steelmaking business in the U.K., now and in the future,” said Hans Fischer, chief executive of Tata Steel’s European operations.
