Tata Steel Receives OK to Build U.K. EAF

“We are very pleased to have secured approval to build sustainable steelmaking in Port Talbot. Amidst a challenging global market, this is a significant milestone for the project and we are committed to begin large-scale work on-site this summer, ahead of the electric arc furnace starting up from the end of 2027,” said Tata Steel U.K. chief executive officer Rajesh Nair.

Nair said the GBP1.25 billion investment is the most significant investment made in the U.K. steel industry in decades, preserving thousands of jobs and safeguard Port Talbot steelmaking in Port Talbot for generations.

The project includes a Tenova electric arc furnace, two new ladle metallurgy furnaces and supporting infrastructure. The furnace is being designed to produce 3.2 million tons annually.

Tata Steel U.K. is shifting to electric steelmaking as it seeks carbon neutrality by 2045. To that end, the company has already shut down the two blast furnaces that served the plant.
