Tata Steel Reaches Milestone In Development Of New Steel Works
09/10/2015 - Tata Steel has reached a milestone in the development of its Kalinganagar steel works – the coke ovens have been placed into the production.
In an announcement, Tata Steel said production began on 4 September. Heating of the ovens began 19 May, it said.
“It's a momentous occasion for Tata Steel as we strive ahead on the journey to commission the Kalinganagar project. The production of coke from the coke oven plant is among the major achievements from Kalinganagar project, and we are extremely happy to reach the milestone,” said Rajiv Kumar, vice president of operations, in a statement.
Located in the Indian state of Odisha, the project is the country’s largest single greenfield steel project. The steel works, when finished, is to have an annual capacity of 6 million metric tons, with half of that coming in the first phase of construction.
The first phase includes two oven batteries, each made up of 88 ovens. Together they’ll be able to produce 1.5 million metric tons annually. Coke oven gas will be reused as a fuel for steelmaking operations.
