Tata Steel Posts 49% Increase in Q3 Sales

Tata Steel surpassed 600,000 tonnes monthly crude steel production for the first time in December 2009, a 21% increase compared to last December’s production of 494,000 tonnes. The plant is operating at a rate of 7.2 million tonnes per annum, against the rated capacity of 6.8 million tonnes per annum.
 
Hot metal production saw an increase of 15% in December, at 651,000 tonnes vs. 566,000 tonnes in December ’08. Likewise, saleable steel production was up 77%: 592,000 tonnes vs. 334,000 tonnes last year.
 
December sales were at 636,000 tonnes compared to 368,000 tonnes in December ’08, an increase of 73%. Flat products sales increased 90% over December ’08, and Long products sales were up 56%.
 
For Q3 FY’10, sales stood at 1,597,000 tonnes compared to 1,071,000 tonnes in the same period in FY’09, a 49% increase.
 
Production of hot metal (+11%), crude steel (+15%), and saleable steel (+37%) all increased in Q3 FY’10 compared to FY’09.
 
Other highlights include LD#1 (steel meltshop) recording its best-ever production of 272,391 tonnes and Hot Strip Mill recording its best-ever production of 338,570 tonnes.
