Tata Steel Plans 750K-Ton Rebar Mill, DRI Plants
08/29/2022 - Tata Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian state of Punjab to build a greenfield rebar mill and has contracted for the design of direct reduction plants in Europe.
In India, the company is planning to build an electric-arc-furnace (EAF)-based mill that will be able to annually produce 750,000 metric tons of rebar. And in the Netherlands, the company has signed Danieli and Tenova to build direct reduction plants as replacements for blast furnaces.
Tata Steel Netherlands is looking to transition its IJmuiden plant from classical blast furnace production to green hydrogen-based steel production. Tenova and Danieli are partners in their Energiron plant technology.
Energiron plants can use hydrogen as a reductant out of the box, eliminating need for equipment modifications down the road.
“The new plants will be built on our site while all the current plants will remain in operation until the new installations are up and running,” said Tata sustainability director Annemarie Manger.
Meanwhile in India, the company is looking for the new EAF to help it achieve its net-zero ambitions there.
“Steel produced through the recycled route entails lower resource consumption and lower carbon emissions, which reinforces our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our operations,” said Tata Steel chief executive and managing director T. V. Narendran.
“Punjab is an ideal location for our electric arc furnace given its proximity to the market and scrap generating auto hub. We see a good long-term potential of growth for steelmaking through scrap route in India, if effective and simplified scrap collection policies are made and implemented," he added.
