Tata Steel May Add 2 Million Tons of Capacity to New Steel Works
01/30/2017 - A Tata Steel executive said the company will seek board approval for plans to expand a planned second phase of construction on its new Kalinganagar Works sometime by the midpoint of the year.
Originally, Tata has planned to build out the facility in two phases, with each bringing about 3 million metric tons of capacity into production. But now, the second phase will be designed for 5 million metric tons, bring its total capacity to 8 million metric tons, Tata managing director TV Narendran said, according to Indian news agency PTI.
The integrated facility began producing steel in 2016.
Additionally, the company plans to undertake projects to remove production bottlenecks at its Jamshedpur facility, which would increase capacity from 10 million to 11 million metric tons, Narendran said during a press conference, according to The Hindu newspaper.
Narendran told the newspaper that once the board signs off on it, the Kalinganagar expansion probably will take three or four years to complete.
