Tamco Recognizes 2003
Safety Persons of the Year

Feb. 19, 2004 — Tamco’s Joint Union and Management Safety Committee recently announced the company’s 2003 Safety Persons of the Year. Award winners included Meltshop Manager Jim Crompton; Maintenance Manger Joel Reilly; and Assistant Roller James Vega.

Tamco awards its Safety Person of the Year to hourly and salary person(s) whose safety attitudes and actions best reflect the company’s core values — communication; building relationships; training; teamwork; and continuous improvement.

Nominations for Safety Person of the Year are received from the Union Safety & Health Committee, the Accident Prevention Team, and the Joint Safety Committee. The Safety Person of the Year receives a $50 gift certificate for the restaurant of their choice, a custom jacket and a day off with pay.

Jim Crompton, Tamco’s Meltshop Manager, has over 29 years of experience in the steel industry. He came to Tamco from North Star Steel in Kingman, Ariz., bringing with him a wealth of knowledge in several areas, including safety. Jim joined Tamco in April of 2003 and immediately made a positive difference in the safety program in the Meltshop. He instituted root-cause analysis in the process of accident investigations; made his supervisors readily available for various types of in-depth safety training; addressed safety issues with solutions that went above and beyond federal and state requirements. Overall, Jim raised the safety bar in his department, resulting in a 60% reduction in accidents in the Meltshop from the previous year and setting a Meltshop safety record.

Joel Reilly, Tamco’s Maintenance Manager, has been with Tamco for 27 years. Under his leadership, his department has set the standard for safety at Tamco year in and year out. The Maintenance Department has gone over 5 years without a lost-time accident and 166 consecutive days without any accidents at all. Joel also subscribes to training, training and more training for all of his personnel, making effective use of incentives to reinforce the positive safety actions of his personnel. He has had five employees elected as Safety Persons of the Month in 2003 and two elected as Co-Safety Persons of the Year in 2002.

James (Springy) Vega, Assistant Roller, has worked for Tamco for 11 years. The October 2003 Safety Person of the Month, Springy is an active participant of the Accident Prevention Team, Zone Safety Reps, and the Joint Safety Committee. Last year Springy made an informative safety presentation to the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Safety Committee in Raleigh, N.C., speaking about the opportunities and contributions that the hourly workers make to Tamco’s Safety Program.

Other nominees for Tamco’s 2003 Safety Persons of the Year included Jerry Davis and C.J. Dezan from the Rolling Mill; Lewis Berke and Ray Pierce from Maintenance; and John Tevis and Ken Gibson from the Meltshop.
