Sunoco Celebrates Start of Construction at Haverhill II Coke Plant

Sunoco, Inc. held a brick-laying ceremony at a second SunCoke Energy Heat Recovery Coke manufacturing plant in Haverhill, Ohio.

Severstal North America, Inc. and WCI Steel, Inc. have executed long-term contracts with SunCoke for the purchase of coke from the new plant, whose total cost is estimated at approximately $230 million.

The facility, which will be 100% owned and operated by SunCoke Energy, will include 100 Jewell Thompson Heat Recovery ovens that will produce approximately 550 thousand tons of blast furnace coke per year. It is designed to capture waste heat from the ovens to produce and supply steam to a 67-megawatt turbine, and will provide a net average of 46 megawatts of emission-free electricity into the regional power market.

SunCoke Energy’s first Haverhill coke plant also produces 550 thousand tons of coke per year and began operation in March 2005. Both plants will employ the company’s own process technology that virtually eliminates coke-oven emissions and is specifically referenced in the U.S. Clean Air Act as the "maximum achievable control technology" for coke production.

The plant’s brick-laying ceremony included the laying of bricks by Governor Ted Strickland and SunCoke Energy, Inc. President Mike Dingus. "We are pleased and honored to have Governor Ted Strickland and our key stakeholders join us on this day of significant increased economic momentum for Scioto County, as well as for the continued growth of our coke business," said Mike Dingus, Senior Vice President of Sunoco, Inc. and President of SunCoke Energy.

"The Governor, the Ohio Department of Development, officials in Scioto County and Green Township, the NS railroad, and the building trades have all been key partners with SunCoke to bring us to this point with the start of construction of our second Heat Recovery Coke plant at Haverhill. The cooperation and support we have received has been outstanding throughout and is greatly appreciated. SunCoke and our many fine employees will do all that we can to merit that trust and commitment by continuing to be a responsible neighbor," Dingus added.

Construction of the second Haverhill coke plant actually began on March 2nd of this year, and initial coke production expected in June of next year.
