Sumitomo Metals Recognized by Panasonic under ECO-VC Initiative

Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. has received two gold awards from Panasonic Corp. for its ECO-VC (Value Creation) Initiative. This award is given to suppliers of Panasonic Group companies that make significant contributions to reducing CO2 emissions and making their products more competitive.

Five suppliers received gold awards out of 668 accomplishments from 444 suppliers.

Hiroshi Tomono, President of Sumitomo Metals, was delegated as a representative of suppliers and made a presentation titled "Sumitomo Metals’ Eco-Friendly Activities" at the awards meeting.

One of the awarded activities was "Adoption of heat-release steel sheet as heat sink material for ultra-thin TVs." Responding to the need for thinner, multifunctional liquid crystal display TVs, Sumitomo Metals developed ultra-thin heat sink materials based on heat-release steel sheeting. The company developed a paint that has a thermal emissivity close to theoretical limitation and coated a heat-release steel sheet with this paint, creating the ultra-thin heat sink.

The other awarded activity was "Weight reduction in beam materials for housing." Panasonic Electric Works Techno-Structure Co, Ltd. makes the wood-frame house structure named "Techno-Structure." Its composite beams made of steel and wood use Sumitomo Metals’ welded lightweight H-beams, "SMart BEAM." Sumitomo Metals assessed strength and vibration of the composite beam and optimized shapes and welding conditions of metal joints that are used to connect columns to the beam, thus making it possible to reduce the gauge of the H-beams.
