Sumitomo Metals Introduces Tailored Blank Facility at SSC Kyushu

Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. recently introduced a tailored welded blank (TWB) facility at SSC Kyushu Co., Ltd. (KSSC), a coil center based in the Kyushu region that Sumitomo Metals operates in cooperation with Kanpoh Steel Co., Ltd, Sumitomo Corp., and Sumikin Bussan Corp. The facility began operation on October 1.

Sumitomo Metals and Sumitomo Corp. now operate six domestic TWB supply bases, which they claim represents the largest TWB supply capacity in Japan.

The Sumitomo Metals Group's previous TWB facilities mainly comprised YAG laser welding systems, but with this new facility it has introduced a fiber laser welding machine (oscillator: output of 4 kW, manufactured by IPG Photonics Corp.; production equipment: Sumikin Plant, Ltd.). The company also introduced a fiber laser welding machine with the highest output in Japan (10 kW) at the Kashima Steel Works No. 2 Steel Sheet Plant in September 2007.

KSSC's TWB materials are supplied to Toyota Motor Kyushu Inc. after pressing and assembly at Toyotetsu Fukuoka Co., Ltd., a major customer.
