Successful Audit Certifies NLMK’s Compliance to ISO 14001-2004

Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) has successfully passed the annual certification audit of its Environmental Management System, confirming that its environmental practices are compliant with ISO 14001-2004.

NLMK has implemented a number of major environmental projects over the past year and a half, including revamping the process water supply system, whereby the company reduced its river water consumption and waste water discharge by 2.5 times. Additional projects over that time have included reconstructing the converter’s off-gas ducts with a secondary dedusting system, and revamping the electrostatic precipitators for kilns in the refractory shop.

The company also decommissioned four obsolete coke batteries and part of a coal tar chemical processing cycle two years earlier than planned, which resulted in a 75% reduction of emissions from coke production facilities in Lipetsk.

For this year’s audit, professional auditors from TUV CERT, Germany, confirmed NLMK’s fulfillment of its environmental protection commitments following a thorough examination of the company’s business units, technical services, and current environmental management documentation. The company passed its first independent ISO-14001 certification audit in 2002.
