Striking Workers Halt Production at Mexican Plant
03/07/2016 - Unionized workers at ArcelorMittal’s Lazaro Cardenas steel works in Mexico have walked off the job, saying that the company has violated their collective bargaining agreement.
The action has halted production at the facility, which is Mexico’s largest and is the country’s leading slab exporter.
“We regret the union's decision, and we hope to reach an agreement that allows us to restore normal operations as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement.
The strike came in spite of a refusal from Mexico's federal labor board to process a legal strike demand, according to the United Steelworkers union, which is supporting the action.
ArcelorMittal has called the strike illegal, and describes it as a blockade, the Reuters news service reported.
