Results of the vote were 99.5% in the meltshop and 96% in the rod mill, in favor of strike action if necessary by the deadline of September 16.
Local 8794 President Richard Leblanc said a strike is not the goal, but it will be the consequence if Heico does not withdraw concessions from the bargaining table. "It would be irresponsible for the union to accept any offer that threatens to take away what we have built over many decades with Ivaco," Leblanc said. "If it comes to that, the strike will be the complete responsibility of Heico, by forcing more than 1,000 families to stand up for what they believe is right. It is a difficult decision and is not taken lightly."
Local 7940 President Mario Léveillé added: "We will do everything in our power to avoid a strike, but we will not back down from seeking a fair and just settlement with this company."
Just one year ago the union welcomed Heico Companies LLC's bid to purchase the operations of Ivaco Inc., after Heico said it would honor Steelworker contracts. At the time, the company also stated it would pay arrears in pension contributions, and would fund pensions going forward.
