Steelworkers to Begin Voting on U. S. Steel Labor Deal
01/12/2016 - The union rank-and-file at United States Steel Corporation are preparing to vote on a tentative labor agreement with the integrated steelmaker, reports The Times of Northwest Indiana newspaper.
According to the newspaper, ballots are being mailed now, and United Steelworkers members will have a week or two to decide whether they will accept the deal.
The sides began bargaining in June and continued exchanging proposals past the contract’s 1 September 2015 expiration. They reached a tentative agreement in December.
According to the official, the three-year deal offers no pay increases, but it gives a 5-percent boost to a profit sharing plan and largely preserves health insurance benefits for active and retired employees.
The contract covers approximately 18,000 workers at more than a dozen facilities in the United States.
