Steelworkers Local Casting Ballots on Strike Authorization
06/27/2022 - Contract negotiations between Stelco and United Steelworkers at the company’s Nanticoke, Ont., plant in Canada have stalled, with union workers voting Monday on whether to authorize a strike, should negotiators deem one necessary.
In a statement, the union said wages, benefits and pensions are key issues.
"Other large Canadian industrial companies like Bombardier and ArcelorMittal Long Products are paying their workers 18-26% increases over five or six years. Our members see that and they know they deserve to keep pace. Instead, the company is offering to shuffle around our pay and bonuses to disguise the fact that there’s only a small overall increase," said Randy Graham, president of United Steelworkers Local 8782.
The current five-year labor agreement expires at the end of this month.
