The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $10,000 toward emergency aid and reconstruction efforts following the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The contribution is being made through the Relief Fund set up by the Maritime Union of New Zealand.
“The Maritime Union of New Zealand is one of the many community-based organizations that are working to assist families devastated by the loss of a family member, and the destruction of their homes,” said Ken Neumann, USW National Director for Canada. “Thanks to the contributions of Steelworkers members to the Humanity Fund, we are able to be part of that effort.”
A powerful 6.3-magnitude quake hit the second-largest city in New Zealand on February 22, causing widespread damage. The latest reports say 166 have been killed in the quake, with others still missing. Thousands of homes have been destroyed and there is significant damage to infrastructure and public and private buildings.
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization. Steelworkers members contribute to the Fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements; in some cases employers make matching contributions.
