Steelworkers Approve New Labor Agreement With Cliffs Natural Resources
09/30/2016 - Members of the United Steelworkers union have ratified a three-year labor agreement with iron ore producer Cliffs Natural Resources, the company announced on Thursday.
The agreement, which covers about 2,000 workers at its Tilden and Empire mines in Michigan and its United Taconite and Hibbing Taconite mines in Minnesota, is retroactive to 1 October 2015 and will expire next fall.
The (Minneapolis) Star Tribune said the announcement is welcomed news in Minnesota’s Iron Range, which has been suffering through the industry downturn – nearly 2,000 workers on Iron Range have been laid off, the newspaper said.
In a prior statement, the union said the agreement preserves wages and benefits without sacrificing living standards for employees and retirees.
