Steelworkers Again Reject TimkenSteel Labor Agreement
11/17/2017 - Union employees at TimkenSteel Corp.’s Canton, Ohio, USA, facilities have rejected a tentative labor agreement for the second time in as many months.
Members of United Steelworkers Local 1123 on Thursday voted down the four-year agreement, 673-590. Union members were to have reported for work as scheduled today.
"We're extremely disappointed because both the company and the union returned to the bargaining table a few weeks ago and once again worked hard to arrive at a fair and realistic agreement focused on benefitting our employees and the community," said Bill Bryan, TimkenSteel's executive vice president of manufacturing and supply chain.
"The agreement, which was voted down despite recommendation from the union's bargaining committee, offered our employees the ability to continue to earn some of the best wages and benefits packages in Stark County, while allowing TimkenSteel to stand stronger against the significant competitive pressures the company faces as an independent steel producer in today's global marketplace."
The union in October rejected a tentative deal on a count of 708-574 and sent negotiators back to the bargaining table. A revised version of that deal was tentatively agreed to last week.
Both agreements provided for a 2% wage increase in each year of the deal. The revised offer provided for a $1,000 lump sum payment, a favorable compensation rule for the skilled trades, and a floating holiday.
