Steelworkers, Iron Ore Producer Enter Contract Negotiations
09/14/2015 - Coal and iron ore producer Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. has opened contract negotiations with the United Steelworkers union.
The company and the union met in Pittsburgh, Pa., USA, on 10 September for an initial “sound off” meeting, and bargaining on local issues resumed on 11 September, according to the union.
The two sides are to meet today, 14 September, to exchange top-table proposals.
The union said in a statement that it is committed to working with Cliffs to reduce costs. However, it said it will not allow the company to use a “temporary” downturn in the iron ore market as an excuse for contract concessions.
The contract, which covers about 2,600 employees at four locals, expires Oct. 1.
