Steelmaker Targets Heavier Bar-in-Coil Weights Through Mill Upgrade
10/16/2018 - South Korean long products producer DaehanSteel Co. Ltd. has awarded a contract to SMS group for upgrades to a rolling mill at the company’s Pyeongtaek plant.
In an announcement, SMS group said it is being called upon to modernize the mill’s vertical compact coiler. The upgrades will allow the mill to produce coiled bar in weights of up to five metric tons.
“The main target of the modernization is the production of heavier coils, which will reduce the downtimes in the cut-and-bend facilities leading to a reduction in production costs,” SMS group said.
To that end, it will install a new billet welder at the reheat furnace exit to join 130-mm- and 150-mm-square billets, allowing for continuous rolling.
The project also includes modifications to the existing water quenching and soft-cooling line as well as to the vertical compact coiler.
