Steelmaker Taps Primetals for New Ladle Furnace
02/25/2016 - Russia’s Severstal has ordered a new twin-ladle furnace for its Cherepovets steel works, according to the vendor on the project.
The vendor, Primetals, said the furnace will be capable of treating 375-metric-ton charges in 45 minutes or less. It also will lift converter steel production more than 8 percent to 10.3 million metric tons per year, Primetals said.
Under the contract, Primetals will provide the engineering for the furnace, an alloying system and the dedusting system. It also will supply key components and associated electrical and automation equipment. Additionally, it will oversee installation and commissioning.
Primetals said the facility is one of the world’s largest integrated iron and steel works, producing 11.3 million metric tons of liquid steel in 2014. Despite its size and its three 350-metric-ton converters, the facility has had only one ladle furnace.
Not only will the project boost capacity, but it is expected to save the facility EUR10 million in annual operating costs because, once completed, all of its steel treatment will be done in a single section of the plant, Primetals said.
The project is to be completed by early 2017.
Earlier this month, Severstal announced it would invest RUR15.2 billion in the facility. Other projects include the installation of a new coating line and the revamp of a 4-stand continuous tandem cold rolling mill.
