Steelmaker Returns Blast Furnace to Service
11/21/2016 - ArcelorMittal has restarted a blast furnace at its Indiana Harbor plant in Indiana to support the Mexican auto market, according to The Times newspaper of northwest Indiana.
According to the newspaper, much of the furnace's output will be shipped to ArcelorMittal's AM/NS Calvert joint venture in Alabama for processing before it lands in Mexico.
ArcelorMittal is undertaking a US$200 million optimization project at the facility, idling some assets while investing in others as part of its broader Action 2020 program.
This year, the company idled an aluminizing line, an 84-inch hot strip mill and a continuous galvanizing line. It plans to idle the No. 2 steel shop next year. But at the same time, it is installing a new caster at the No. 3 steel shop and restoring an 80-inch hot strip mill, among other things.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
