Steelmaker Issues Acceptance Certificate on Continuous Caster Improvements
09/16/2015 - German steelmaker Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi GmbH has issued the final acceptance certificate for improvements to a 21-year-old continuous billet caster, according to the contractor on the project.
The contractor, Primetals Technologies, said the project improved internal and surface qualities of the billets and provided for a production increase of 20 percent.
The caster, which is at the company’s Riesa plant, dates to 1994. Primetals said it installed a new machine head, which included DiaMold molds and a retractable DynaFlex mold oscillator. It also worked to optimize secondary cooling.
The installation work was conducted during the 2014 holiday outage.
The caster produces low- and medium-carbon steels, which are further processed in a wire rod mill at the plant. With the improvements, the caster is now capable of producing 1.2 million metric tons annually.
