Steelmaker in Taiwan Orders Bar-in-Coil Line from Siemens

Siemens Metals Technologies has received an order from Taiwan’s Wei Chih Steel Industry Co. Ltd. to supply a new rolling line for bar-in-coil. The line will be constructed in the company’s bar mill in Tainan and is scheduled to go on stream at the end of 2013. This will enable Wei Chih to expand its product portfolio to include high-quality ring material with excellent surface properties and low tolerances.

The Wei Chih bar mill was constructed by Siemens in Tainan in 1994, and modernized in 2010 with the introduction of the sizing technology. For the bar-in-coil line, Siemens will be designing the complete process equipment and handling the detailed engineering for the equipment provided by the customer, as well as supplying key components. These include the pinch roll and the shear for bar dividing, the bar feeders with pinch rolls, two Garrett coilers and the coil cooling system. The amount of space available calls for an especially compact design. The scope of supply also includes the fluid systems. Siemens will also be supervising the installation and commissioning of the plant.

The bar-in-coil line is designed to produce 85 tonnes per hour, corresponding to an annual capacity of more than 500,000 tonnes of high-grade and carbon steel end products. The line will be able to produce rebars with diameters of between 10 and 40 millimeters, and round steels with diameters ranging from 13 to 42 millimeters. The maximum coil weight will be 2.1 tonnes.

Wei Chih Steel Industry Co. Ltd was founded in 1982. The company produces reinforcement and structural steels for the domestic market and exports to several countries worldwide.
