SteelBenchmarker: HRB Prices Bottom in U.S.?

The bi-monthly SteelBenchmarker™ United States HRB spot price for 10 June 2013 rose 2.4% to $652 per tonne after falling five consecutive times. The Western European HRB price slipped 0.2% to $601 per tonne (on a Euro basis, it was down 2.8%) for the ninth consecutive time. The World export HRB price fell 1.3% to $539 per tonne for the seventh consecutive time. The Chinese HRB price fell 2.3% to $473 per tonne for the eighth consecutive time.
In its 173rd report, the SteelBenchmarker released 10 steel product and 3 U.S. scrap prices. Of these, here are four benchmark prices for hot-rolled band for 10 June 2013:
USA – $652 per tonne ($592 per net ton), FOB the mill – up $15 per tonne from $637 ($578 ton) two weeks ago, flat with the recent low of $652 ($591 ton) on 22 October 2012 and up $99 from the low of $553 per tonne ($502 ton) on 23 November 2009. It is down $318 per tonne from the recent high of $970 ($880 ton) on 28 March 2011 and down $551 (45.8%) from the record peak of $1,203 per tonne ($1,091 ton) on 28 July 2008.
China – $473 per tonne, ex-works – down $11 per tonne from $484 two weeks ago, but up $26 from the recent low of $447 on 10 September 2012 and up $66 from the low of $407 per tonne on 12 October 2009. It is down $164 per tonne from the recent high of $637 on 22 August 2011 and down $260 (35.5%) from the record peak of $733 per tonne on 14 July 2008.
Western Europe – $601 (€452) per tonne, ex-works – down $1 per tonne from $602 (€465) two weeks ago (on a Euro basis, it was down €13), but up $10 (down €13) from the recent low of $591 (€465) on 12 November 2012 and up $30 (up €71) from the low of $571 (€381) per tonne on 23 November 2009. It is down $251 (€153) per tonne from the recent high of $852 (€605) on 28 March 2011 and down $603 (50.1%) (€304) (40.2%) from the record peak of $1,204 (€756) per tonne on 14 July 2008.
World Export Price – $539 per tonne, FOB the port of export – down $7 per tonne from $546 two weeks ago, but up $7 from recent low of $532 on 8 October 2012 and up $43 from the low of $496 per tonne on 9 November 2009. It is down $263 per tonne from the recent high of $802 on 14 February 2011 and down $574 (51.6%) from the record peak of $1,113 per tonne on 28 July 2008.
