Steel Minister Lays Foundation Stone for SAIL’s Lakhimpur Kheri Processing Unit
02/18/2009 - Steel Authority of India Limited celebrates the start of construction for its eighth steel processing unit, which will be located in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) celebrated this week the start of construction for its eighth steel processing unit, which will be located at the village Behjam, in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
The new Lakhimpur Kheri unit will produce 100,000 tonnes per year of TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars ranging in diameter from 8 to 25 mm from input materials sourced from SAIL's integrated steel plants. It will have a TMT bar mill capable of producing 60,000 tonnes of 8 to 12 mm diameter TMT bars and 40,000 tonnes of 16 to 25 mm diameter TMT bars per year. SAIL is estimating the total cost for the project at around Rs 85 crore.
The new unit’s foundation stone was laid by Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilisers and Steel Shri Ram Vilas Paswan. The ceremony was also attended by Union Minister of State for Steel Shri Jitin Prasada, MP (Kheri) Shri Ravi Prakash Verma, Secretary (Steel) Shri P.K.Rastogi, SAIL Chairman Shri S.K. Roongta, Managing Director, Rourkela Steel Plant, Shri S.N. Singh, as well as senior officials of union and state government and members of the legislative assembly.
SAIL said that construction of this facility supports its ongoing strategy to meet market demand for tailor-made steel products while helping to increase per-capita steel consumption in rural areas by setting up Steel Processing Units in locations across the country where it does not yet have any production facility. The company is planning to set up 11 steel processing units in 7 states where it does not have any production facility. To date, foundation stones have been laid for new units at Betiah, Mahnar and Gaya in Bihar; Gwalior, Ujjain and Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh and Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir. SAIL’s steel processing units will use products such as hot rolled coils, billets and TMT bars produced by the company's main integrated steel plants to manufacture a wide variety of steel items that can be utilized by ‘the common man’.
The company said the new Lakhimpur Kheri unit is expected to be completed in 18 months.
