Steel Manufacturers Association Recognizes Three for Safety Achievements

The winners are Peter Ossmann, of North Star BlueScope Steel in Ohio; Tim Smith, of Gerdau's Petersburg, Va., facility; and TMK IPSCO's welded tube mill in Geneva, Neb., USA.

In a statement, the association said Ossmann was selected for his engagement and outreach with local emergency personnel.

“His dedication to safety extends beyond the job. His work to ensure his community and emergency response organizations are knowledgeable and well trained is commendable,” the association said.

The association also cited Smith’s commitment to safety, which has led to consistent improvements in the mill’s safety record and safety management systems. He recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary at the facility.

Meanwhile, TMK’s Geneva plant, under the leadership of Steve Benson, was named a winner in recognition of reaching a safety milestone this year – it has operated for 10 years without an OSHA recordable accident.

“This is a significant and rare achievement in the steel industry and places TMK IPSCO among a select group of SMA members,” the association said.

The winners will be presented with the award during the SMA’s safety committee and plant operations fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa., USA.
