Steel Manufacturers Association Announces Winners of Safety, Innovation Awards
04/27/2016 - The Steel Manufacturers Association has named Gerdau’s Midlothian, Texas, plant as the recipient of the Don B. Daily SMA Achievement in Safety, its highest safety award.
The award was presented to the mill in recognition of its high angle rope and confined space rescue team, which assisted the local fire department in rescuing a worker who became trapped when a roof collapsed at a nearby cement plant.
The award was one of several presented to companies during the association’s annual members conference in Washington, D.C. The association represents approximately 30 North American steelmakers, most of whom are EAF operators.
Also recognized during the conference was Steel Dynamics Inc., which was given a Recognition in Safety award for its development of an air filtration system that has improved air quality for cab crane operators working above ladles.
The 2016 SMA Achievement in Environmental Stewardship and Recycling Award was presented to Sterling Steel for implementing a program that has allowed employees to take a leadership role in environmental preservation, and has enhanced employee awareness of and appreciation for the surrounding community.
Recognition for Environmental Stewardship was presented to CMC Americas for the company’s development and implementation of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design v4 project.
The 2016 SMA Achievement in Innovation Award was presented to Nucor Steel-Berkeley. The mill replaced the existing EAF dust screw conveying system with Hi-Roller Conveyers, which improved the health and safety of the workforce, reduced costs and lightened the facility’s environmental footprint.
The 2016 SMA Achievement in Community Involvement Award was presented to Nucor Steel Marion for fostering a culture of community leadership and engagement. In presenting the award, the association noted the time and money it and its employees have made to various programs, including the United Way, Make-A-Wish, Marion City Schools and the Rushmore Academy.
Recognition in Community Involvement was presented to Angee Clements of Nucor-LMP for her efforts promoting driving safety for teenagers.
